Why Urban Gardening?

City gardens offer some unique challenges - too much shade from buildings as well as trees, too much heat radiating from bricks and concrete, too little gardening space so that trees and shrubs, bamboo, vines, and perennials must be chosen with care and with three- and four-season interest in mind. Ask us to recommend solutions to your particular gardening dilemma. What follows is a brief overview of what can be found at the Urban Gardener. Please call or email us to check on specific plants or products.

Annuals

Chosen with care, new and unusual plants, particularly those that will work well in planters, window boxes, and baskets, for sun and shade and in-between, can be found in our pergolas. We always have a large selection of old-fashioned and heirloom favorites as well as annual grasses and tropical foliage plants - we have over 100 varieties from which to choose. And we are the place where you will find the amazing plants that you see in the Western PA Conservancy public gardens, grown by local nurseries.

Perennials

Over 300 varieties, ranging from the hardy and dependable to the more unusual and even bizarre, are at home in our urban setting. We also offer a large selection of plants native to the northeast and specifically to Western PA. Come and browse through our constantly changing inventory where you'll be sure to find just the right addition to your garden. Since all of our plant material is container grown, it can be safely planted even in the heat of the summer.

Trees and Shrubs

We specialize in small ornamental trees and a variety of shrubs that thrive in urban conditions - hardy flowering natives, evergreens, ground covers and the more unusual specimen plants. These are the "bones" of the garden, offering multi-season interest with their flowers, bark, branching, berries and fabulous fall foliage. As an extra bonus, we deliver in the Northside area.

Bamboo

Hardy Bamboos, both clump-forming and running varieties, are popular for screens and hedges as well as for stand-alone specimens. Tall and upright, weeping, golden, striped, and pea green - we have the right bamboo for your garden. And note: bamboo is truly spectacular in the winter garden.

Vines

Flowering vines are particularly useful for covering unsightly fences and walls. We have annual and hardy vines, fast and slow growers, flowering, berry producing, fragrant and all beautiful - let us help you select the right one for your conditions and needs.

Christmas

It's a whole new world at the Urban Gardener when we reopen after Thanksgiving - summertime disappears with the arrival of Christmas trees and evergreens!

Freshly cut Christmas Trees
Visit us in December and find the perfect freshly cut, locally grown Christmas tree for your holiday. We have trees ranging from 4 feet to 14 feet in fir, spruce, and pine - Fraser, Douglas and Canaan Fir, Blue Spruce, Scotch and White Pine. All are beautiful and smell like Christmas! Trees over 8 feet tall need to be special ordered. Just email us and we'll take your order.

Note: we offer a 10% discount to churches, and we deliver to the Northside.

Wreaths, Garlands and Greens
Festive decorations for a festive time of year - we always have fresh wreaths of several popular sizes, plain and fancy as well as beautiful garlands and swags. An assortment of firs, cedars, boxwood, juniper, and holly are available by the pound for decorating window boxes, planters, and mantles. Large wreaths can be special ordered as well. Please call or email for availability.
