The Urban Gardener was started in 1997 by two women, Lynne Weber and Joan Kimmel, who wanted to give urban dwellers in southwestern Pennsylvania a garden center devoted to providing varieties of perennials, trees and shrubs that are best suited for urban gardens. Started on the site of an abandoned gas station, we have grown in an organic fashion (a little bit this way, a lot of bit that way, a shed here, a demonstration garden there) so that we now carry beautiful and unusual annual bedding plants, hundreds of varieties of perennials, small trees, flowering and evergreen shrubs, soils, mulches, fertizilers, garden tools and equipment and unique garden art and furniture. Mission Statement
The Urban Gardener owners and employees are committed to both customer and public service. We believe that the best way for gardeners to succeed is to first choose the most appropriate plant for the place in which it is to be planted, and then to select the healthiest plant available. We are committed to helping our customers to accomplish this through the quality of our products, extensive customer service, an informational newsletter, and education programs. In addition, we are dedicated to community service and to enhancing the quality of life of our neighborhood and larger community through relationships with neighbors, community groups, and professional associations.
Consulting at The Urban Gardener
The owners and staff of The Urban Gardener are committed to helping our customers choose "The right plant for the right place." We are available at the garden center to discuss landscaping questions, garden design, disease or insect concerns, organic gardening techniques or other questions. You should feel free to bring photos, drawings or plant lists and our gardening professionals will work to satisfy any concern. There is no charge for this service; we delight in providing it.
On-Site Consultations
While we can usually assist most folks here at the garden center, some prefer to have one or more of our staff visit their home or business to discuss their concerns. On-site visits can include plant health assessments, plant identification, as well as design and landscaping recommendations and plant selections.
Garden Maintenance
Our knowledgeable staff can also help the gardener who is 'too busy to do it myself' through our garden maintenance services. We can provide services for spring and fall cleanup, weeding and deadheading, identifying and treating insects and diseases, pruning of small trees and shrubs, transplanting, dividing -- everything necessary to keep your garden healthy and beautiful.
Side-by-Side Gardening
For those who want to learn by doing, we offer Side-by-Side Gardening. One of our experienced staff will work with you in your garden, helping to identify species, teaching good gardening practices, and helping you to choose the proper plants for your garden.

Newsletter
The Urban Gardener mails out a newsletter four times a year that is full of informative articles on a myriad of subjects of interest to home gardeners, such as deer resistant varieties, pruning needs of various clematis varieties, what canal boats in Holland can tell us about good container gardening choices, to mention just a few. Visitors can also sign up to receive our periodic email newsletters (eblasts) which will keep you up-to-date on new varieties, special events and special offers. Seminars
Three or four informative seminars are presented every season at The Urban Gardener in subjects such as Composting, Rainbarrels, Disease and Pest Identification, Container Gardening, Planting for Fall Color and Winter Interest, Garden Design, and others. Check our newsletters and eblasts for more information.
Public Speaking
The owners of The Urban Gardener are available to speak to garden clubs, or other associations throughout the greater Pittsburgh area on issues of interest to gardeners. If you know of a group that might be interested in scheduling such a talk, please contact us.

In keeping with our mission and commitment to community service and to enhancing the quality of life of our neighborhood and larger community, the Urban Gardener has been involved in a number of special projects. We have helped to design and/or recommend and plants for:
- Observatory Hill - the flower gardens at Riverview Park
- Central Northside Neighborhood Council – plants for the Alpine Gardens playground
- East Allegheny Community Council - a tree planting for the Allegheny Commons
- Allegheny County - native plants for the Courthouse courtyard Native Rain Garden
- Carnegie Library - bamboo, grasses and shrubs to decorate the Federal Street patio
- Bloomfield Civic Association – a new design for Morrow Park
- Children's Museum of Pittsburgh – bamboo and native grasses for containers, and perennials for a butterfly garden
- Allegheny Commons – a shade garden surrounding the Thomas A. Armstrong memorial
- Student Conservation Associates – a public garden on California Avenue
We have also planted trees with the Pittsburgh Tree Tenders and taken part in programs sponsored by the Friends of the Pittsburgh Urban Forest, the Allegheny County PSU Master Gardeners, and Phipps Conservatory.
Summer of 2009 found us very honored to be selected as installation artists for the Gestures exhibit at the Mattress Factory, here in our own neighborhood. We built a 'guerrilla garden' in front of the exhibition space, and called it Lawn - and just like our other guerrilla gardens, it not only totally changed the appearance of the building but also added to the whole streetscape.
